By request of club members the committee decided to hold a Studio Evening this year and Club Secretary Sylvia Wilson contacted Mike Crowe from Newton Abbot and Mike Bond from Paignton who run studio evenings occasionally for their own club.

They were pleased to oblige and contacted two young models, Andy Wright and Dani Parker, who kindly agreed to come along and sit for us.

The original intention was for one of the two Mikes to lecture on the studio set-up and flash photography, followed by the modelling session, but as this method had not been a success when tried a few weeks earlier, the plan was changed to ‘educate by example’.

Two ‘Studios’ were arranged, one at each end of our club hall at Bittaford and members’ cameras were fitted up with wireless links to the lighting equipment.

Various lighting conditions were tried out with members holding items such as reflectors and even asking for ‘barn doors’ and ‘snoots’ to be simulated.

For each studio, members were given starting values for ISO and aperture that were known to work, although several members adapted these settings and made images at varying apertures and focus distances.

Interacting with the models was somewhat challenging for many members, but both Andy and Dani were very helpful and soon the ice had been broken and some good photographs made. A copy of some of the members’ photos from the evening was provided to Andy and Dani a few weeks later. Hopefully they can use them in their portfolios.

The models both brought along a change of clothes and as well as this changed over ‘studios’ giving all members a good chance to get a range of different photographs.

Many thanks are due to the two Mikes and to the models as well for a very enjoyable evening. Andy is standing for this year’s Face of Plymouth, an aspiring supermodel competition. We wish him good luck and plenty of votes.
