Photographers’
Question Time held at the Ivybridge & District Camera
Club recently brought forth a plethora of probing photographic
subjects for everyone’s enjoyment and edification.
Feedback from members seems to show the idea ‘hit
the spot’ and the club will hold a similar event
again.
The panel, comprising
Keith Miller, Keith Mullin, Peter Pearce and Colin Wilkins
were occasionally aided by offerings from the audience
and chaired by David Rayner, who also operated the computer
and projector to illustrate some of the answers. Subjects
covered ranged from the entirely technical such as “What
is Bicubic Smoothing” to the esoteric and philosophical
such as “When does a photograph become a picture?”
A great time was had by all and there was plenty of
input from the audience.
Just a week previously
the club held their annual Nature Portfolio competition.
The subject this year was ‘Patterns in Nature’
and members’ interpretations of this theme allowed
a wider range of photographs than might be expected
at first sight. This competition is traditionally judged
by voting slips as the entry level is often quite low
and does not warrant a judge’s time. However this
year we had a massive entry of both print and digitally
projected portfolios, but there was not time to find
a judge and voting slips were used.
First place in
the Print Section went to Neil Doggett with a trio of
close-ups of slices: Orange slice, Fungi gills and a
fabulously juicy-looking Kiwi slice. Second place went
to Stuart Barnes with a set of Tree bark patterns, while
third was awarded to Gert Landers with a set of shells
on the beach cleverly forming the numerals I, II &
III.
The Digitally
Projected Section was won by Ann Owens with three almost
3D-appearing rock-art images. Keith Miller took second
place with a set of well-represented flower images and
Bruce Thomas gained third place with three sets of wave
patterns.
April also saw
the club hold another of its annual competitions, the
Portrait Cup. This has no Digitally Projected Image
section and was kindly judged by Mrs Brenda Hutchins
of Plymouth, who had the unenviable task of critiquing
prints with the subject theme of ‘Candid Portrait’.
The Monochrome
Section was won by Bob Pike (South Brent) with ‘Ageing
Potter’, a scene where both the potter and his
workshop had a timeless quality. Second and third places
were won by Stuart Barnes (Plymouth) with two railway-worker
portraits – ‘Guard’ and ‘Waiting
for the Signal’.
The Colour Print
Section was won by Keith Mullin with ‘Peeping
at Prayer Time’ while second place was taken by
Keith Miller with ‘DJ’, taken at a beach
wedding. Brenda Hutchins awarded third place to Graham
Buckler for his ‘Phalia at Ten’ image. The
entry level allowed points to be awarded down to sixth
place and these were given to Alan Davey, Keith Mason
and Geoff Brimblecombe respectively.
Visitors are
always welcome to club meetings and we meet at Bittaford
Community Hall from 7:30 PM, normally on the first,
second and fourth Tuesdays in the month. Our programme,
members’ photographs and much more are all available
elsewhere on this website.
