The Ivybridge & District Camera Club returned from a summer break on the 1st September with a practical session given by member David Rayner.

David illustrated his talk ‘Understanding Aperture’ with a digital slide presentation designed to explore aperture in a new light and to reveal some interesting particulars about this most basic part of camera technology. After covering optical details such as where the f-number scale comes from, he revealed scary items such as chromatic aberration, barrel distortion and diffraction – and how to avoid them. David then invited members to explore their cameras more fully and to try using the P (program shift) and A (aperture priority) modes to make use of the aperture knowledge gained in the talk. Some examples were given and a printed handout provided.

After a tea break David treated members to a digital photo editing session covering non-destructive cloning techniques and a look at how the latest version of Photoshop Elements can be used to increase depth of field in close-up photographs.

The second meeting in September was the members’ show-your-own work event and was well-attended by some 40 members, a good turnout for what is still a holiday season.

The evening started with an audio-visual presentation, jointly produced by Ann Owens (Plymouth) and Sylvia Wilson (Ivybridge) depicting the highly successful Devon Photographic Clubs’ Battle Ivybridge hosted earlier this year. Many of the members and spouses were glimpsed doing their bit to make the day work so well and the show also included reproductions of the winning images. Many thanks to Ann and Sylvia for the AV and also to Graham Buckler (Ivybridge), who along with Ann made up the ‘official’ photographer team for the day. A copy of the AV has been sent to all the participating clubs.

A number of members then showed individual digitally projected images and invited discussion about them. Sue Bishop (Liverton) showed a series of digital images taken while on a photographic course in the Yorkshire Dales, including one shot that is reputed to be the second most photographed place in Britain!

Gert Landers (Ivybridge) was the only person to bring printed images on the night, inviting members to comment on her brilliant panel of wild flower photographs. Graham Buckler showed a portfolio of local images and the evening was rounded off with a selection of winning photographs from recent inter-club battles to get our appetites wetted for the coming season! Many thanks to all who took an active part and indeed to the audience for the constructive comments all round.

The next events are a trio of competitions on the 27th September, followed by a practical evening on October the 6th when we will look at removing chromatic aberration using Photoshop techniques. Visitors are always welcome to club meetings and we meet at Bittaford Community Hall from 7:30 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month plus occasional other Tuesdays. Our programme, members’ photographs and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.
