| The
Devon Photographic Clubs’ Print and Projected
Image Battle was hosted this year by Ivybridge &
District Camera Club.
It was a whole-day
event, starting (for our team of helpers) at 10:00am
and running through to 11:00pm. We held it at South
Brent Village Hall because of the expected size of the
audience and the excellent catering facilities.
This year thirteen
of the county’s clubs took part, each (most) providing
a panel of 5 photographs on a theme and a portfolio
of 5 digitally projected images. |

Twenty
wonderful club helpers (members and spouses) worked
magnificently, both on the day and before the
event to make the battle the great success it
was. Thanks are specially due to Lynn, Pam, Betty,
Graham, all three Keiths, John & Joyce, Tony
& June, Sylvia, Margaret, Ann, two Colins,
Norman & Bob. |
| |
| Many thanks to to Graham,
Colin (L-J), Sylvia & Margaret, who were also
the group who photographed and put our club's panel
together - congratulations on third place! |
Helpers
on the day efficiently carried out their multiple
tasks, and behind the scenes there had been planning
meetings and general organisation run by the committee.
Participants were invited and gently encouraged;
hall layout planned for safe seating; boards had
to borrowed and collected; food planned and purchased;
raffle prizes planned and obtained; the hall vetted
for safety and facilities; budgets to be planned;
window blinds to be designed and prepared; trophies
to be retrieved and all (hopefully) eventualities
covered. |
We all
wore our name badges so visitors could distinguish
us. |

Clubs
soon arrived to set up their individual panels of photographs
so that they looked ‘just right’ for their
closely-kept secret themes. This was the first opportunity
for clubs to see what their competitors were offering,
not that they had a lot of time to do this as it was
soon time for the hall to be closed for the private
viewing of the judge, Mr Brian Galbraith CPAGB of Wadebridge.
Later in the afternoon the hall was opened for refreshments
and public viewing of the panels. In the evening Mr
Galbraith treated an audience of some 130 people to
his entertaining appraisal of the panels and after a
buffet meal, to his adjudication of the projected images. |

Also during the day, representatives
from this year’s participating clubs met and agreed
small changes for next year, mainly to drop film slides
completely and to adopt the PAGB standard for digital
file sizes.

The winning
club panel was judged to be Plymouth Camera
Club’s ‘Stairways’,
with ‘Ballet Dream’ from
Newton Abbot Photographic Club coming second
and ‘Spanning the Day’
from Ivybridge & District camera Club, see
left, making third place.
Plymouth also came first
in the digital portfolio section with Exmouth
Photo Group coming second and Paignton Photographic
Club making third.
There's not room here
for all the images from the battle - but Ann
and Sylvia have produced an amusing Audio-Visual
presentation to run on a PC that shows all of
the entries and highlights the winners. Email
the club if you would like a copy.
Of course - we can't
finish without showing our entry, see left and

It
was encouraging to see that the event was supported
well with Exeter returning this year and Phoenix (Holsworthy)
joining the battle for the first time. Only one or two
‘old hands’ were unable to take part this
year. With Newton Abbot to run the event in 2010 and
Paignton agreeing to run the event in 2011 the next
few years look to be confirmed as super events. Any
Devon club can easily take part in the battle - even
simply by entering the digitally projected section,
as three clubs did this year. Ann and Sylvia have produced
an amusing Audio-Visual presentation to run on a PC
that shows all of the 2009 entries and highlights the
winners. Email the club if you would like a copy |
