Ivybridge
& District Camera Club’s occasional Practical
Evenings often spring something of a surprise but the
last one of the year was especially interesting as members
were asked to bring cameras and join into a demonstration
given by Bittaford member Peter Pearce. The idea was
to take photographs of objects appearing to float in
space and although Peter’s instruction was focused
on eggs, Ivybridge member Gert Landers brought along
a range of sugar craft she had prepared and it was these
everybody found they needed their cameras for. With
some of the images taken being displayed on the club’s
projector on the evening, a most interesting and inspiring
time was had by all.
The following
Tuesday saw a big turnout for the annual Challenge from
the Chair Competition for which this year the subject
was ‘Movement’. Under new rules the competition
was judged by the club chairman, Keith Miller.
The winning entry
in the colour section was Royal Horse Artillery by Geoff
Brimblecombe of Ivybridge, a crisp attack springing
from a zoomed background. Second was Birthday Joy, a
scene of eager and animated action behind a candle-lit
birthday cake by Ivybridge member Keith Mason. Joint
third were Bird Flight by Alan Davey and Water on the
Rocks by Norman Simpson, both from Ivybridge.
Colin Wilkins
from Ivybridge won the slide section with Moving Water
Vapour, a mountain waterfall scene. Keith Mullin, also
from Ivybridge, took both second and third places with
Water Falling and Mud Splash.
The monochrome
section was won with a low-light image of the river
and old pack-horse bridge entitled The Erme in Full
Flow at Ivybridge by Neil Doggett from Cornwood. Phantom
Express by Kevin Moore of Ivybridge gained second place
and third was taken by Keith Mullin with Captivated
by Movement at the Fair.
On Nov 18th members
took part in critiquing 100 ‘travelling’
prints, part of the entry for the Western Counties Photographic
Federation members’ exhibition. These high-scoring
prints travel from club to club located as far apart
as Gloucestershire and Cornwall. Members were asked
to comment on the images and after a slow start soon
warmed to the idea - although it was interesting to
note that it was clearly found easier to look for ‘improvements’
rather than assess the image for its positive attributes!
The large number of prints meant moving on quickly but
the evening worked very well and stimulated good interaction
between members.
Visitors are
always welcome to club meetings and we meet at Bittaford
Community Hall from 7:30 pm on the second and fourth
Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’
photographs and much more are all available elsewhere
on this website.
