Five External Judges in a Month

October is often a busy month for the Ivybridge & District Camera Club with meetings on every Tuesday and this year was no exception. The month started with a practical session hosted by David Rayner delving into ‘colour space’ and how to keep colour under control. An interclub event and two regular competitions were also held in the month; and the first of these contests, an open-subject Merit, was kindly judged by Mrs Sheila Haycox of Exmouth Photo Group.
First place in the colour section was won by our chairman, Keith Miller with Big Air, a high-flying motocross cyclist with appreciative spectators beneath. Keith’s Geysers gained him a third place as well, while second was taken by Margaret Martin with Poppy, an exquisitely coloured and composed image.
The winner of the monochrome section of the competition was judged to be David Rayner with After the Party, an image of a variety of empty bottles captured in the early morning sun. Second place was won by Margaret Martin with Austin, a detailed radiator grill image while Distorted Reflections taken on the river Dart earned competition secretary, Keith Mullin third place.
A hillside tea plantation scene, Still Tea gained first place in the slide section for Alan Davey while second was given to Fireworks by David Rayner, with Colin Wilkins placed third for his detailed close-up, Teasel and Fly.

On the fourth Tuesday of the month Mrs Brenda Hutchins from Plymouth kindly judged the 3rd Digital Shield league competition. There is only one section of this competition as all entries are digital images projected to a screen in a darkened room in a similar way to slides.
The winning entry was Stream, a well-composed small waterfall taken by Keith Mullin on our club evening out back in June, while Airborne, an exciting powerboat leap into the air by Graham Buckler was placed second. Gentle Waves, a beach scene by Margaret Martin was awarded third and places from 4th down to commended were awarded to Neil Doggett, Ted Doggett, Keith Mullin and Alan Bishop.

Despite all this excitement, the foremost highlight of the month was a four-way battle between Ivybridge and three other Devon clubs, Kingsbridge CC, Plymouth CC and the Photo Image Club, also from Plymouth. Over 50 visitors, members and guests turned up at Bittaford on the 21st October for this brand-new digitally projected image battle which was judged by four judges, one from each of the clubs. The scoring was undertaken while everyone partook of a buffet tea provided by several Ivybridge members and spouses and for which many thanks were given.

After tea, emotions had to be held in check for a little longer as the images were re-displayed and the individual scores read out before announcing the winning club. Kingsbridge won the battle with 170 points and so will be the first entry on the Shield. Plymouth took second place, Ivybridge third and Photo Image fourth. With only 22 points between first and last it was a worthy and close-drawn battle with all places not to be sneezed at. Visitors are always welcome to club meetings and we meet at Bittaford Community Hall from 7:30 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’ photographs and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.
