Nearly 40 members and visitors enjoyed the first of
the autumn season’s competition meetings at the
Ivybridge & District Camera Club on 23rd September,
a grand turn out indeed, to see two events kindly judged
by Mr John Hawkins from Newton Abbot.
John started
with our new monochrome-only competition, the Eric Foster
Memorial Cup, which featured 42 prints, a quantity and
indeed quality, dear Eric would have been pleased to
witness. The theme was Church Architecture and this
suited our judge, as he indicated by exhibiting some
of his own similar work over tea break.
The winning
print was of a large moon in a moody sky, partly hidden
by the impressive stepped pyramid of Hallgrims Church,
Reykjavik by Ivybridge member Neil Doggett. The second
placed print was titled Ferocious Gargoyle by John Taylor
from South Brent and third place was given to Alan Davey
of Ivybridge with a photo of the nave at St Clotilde,
Paris. 4th to 6th places were also awarded, going to
Colin Lennox-Jones, John Taylor and Geoff Brimblecombe.
After tea John
critiqued 40 colour prints for our Sports Photographer
of the Year competition, giving Geoff Brimblecombe first
place with Final Lap, a gritty, atmospheric image of
three motorbikes and sidecars racing on a dirt track.
Second place went to John Taylor with Oval Ball Sport,
unusually shot from behind the players. Alan Davey bailed
himself out in third place with Square Cut, a tricky-to-take
close up cricket image. 4th to 6th places were awarded
to Geoff Brimblecombe, Keith Miller and Alan Davey.
The club also
held the second of the year’s Travelogue evenings
earlier this month with a range of Audio-Visual presentations
that stretched from as close as the fireworks on the
Hoe to as far as the outback of Australia. In between
we took to the air in a hot air balloon, visited the
Avon Dam, Paris and Pisa, as well as taking several
trips down the river Dart. Many thanks to Margaret Martin,
Ann Owens, Keith Mason, Alan Davey, Colin Lennox-Jones,
Graham Buckler and Keith Miller for their contributions
to a busy and entertaining evening.
On the first
Tuesday of September the club ran one of our occasional
practical evenings, this time a talk and presentation
on using layers in Photoshop kindly given by Graham
Buckler.
Visitors are
always welcome to club meetings and we meet at Bittaford
Community Hall from 7:30 pm on the second and fourth
Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’
photographs and much more are all available elsewhere
on this website.
