Highly Commended in Devon Clubs Competition

Committee members of the Ivybridge & District Camera Club travelled to Budleigh Salterton on Saturday 17th May to assemble the club’s entry for an all-Devon photographic competition. Over 100 people turned up from various Devon Clubs to compete for the coveted Best Club Trophy as well as the individual awards. Sadly, Ivybridge did not win - that honour went to Crediton - but we did not at all disgrace ourselves as the judge was very complementary about the Ivybridge print panel and gave the Highly Commended mark to our digital slide entries.

On May 6th Colin Wilkins hosted the practical evening at Bittaford with a presentation about image sharpness. Members were treated to both a technical discussion of the maths involved and the basic use of image sharpening tools. The presentation was illustrated with examples of images before and after sharpening and supported by a discussion of some of the things that can go wrong during sharpening an image - such as halos and colour aberrations - and how to avoid them.

The following Tuesday saw the club hold its second competition in the Digitally Projected Image League, a set of competitions held throughout the year that do not require prints. All the images are supplied electronically either by email or on disc.

The winning entry was ‘Storm Clouds Brewing’ by Stuart Barnes of Plymouth. Second place went to Ivybridge member Colin Lennox-Jones with a solarised image of Clevedon pier and the third position was taken by David Rayner with ‘Poppies in an Olive Grove’.

On June 3rd David Rayner will be hosting the practical evening and the main subject will ‘Curves – how to get them in Elements’. The next competition will be the 2nd Challenge Cup, held on the 10th June. . Visitors are always welcome to the club meetings and we meet at Bittaford Community Hall from 7:30pm normally on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’ photographs and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.
