Football no competition for Nature Portfolio

Over 30 members of the Ivybridge & District Camera Club turned out on April 2nd for the annual Nature Portfolio Competition, despite the evening also having a major football screening on TV.

A portfolio for this competition comprises three mounted images conveying a theme and the subject this year was ‘seashore’. Display boards were utilised to present each of the 3 images as a coherent panel from each entrant and judging was by voting slips from all present.

The presentation of a portfolio is somewhat trickier than a straightforward print. Ideally the prints should be mounted sympathetically to each other and the content of each clearly convey the same sub-theme. Even the position the images are displayed in could be important although as a ‘portfolio’ rather than a ‘panel’ this should not necessarily matter, but could help the interpretation.

When one considers the need to illustrate nature on the seashore as well, it’s probably unsurprising that not every entrant perfected all the goals. However the wide variety of images with some technically good photography more than made up for any shortcomings and a very interesting evening was had by all, both in judging the entries and enjoying the portfolios.

Ivybridge member Keith Mason won first place in the print section with a theme centred on a lobster creel. Second place was taken by Neil Doggett with a panel called ‘Bigbury Blight’ and third went to new member Tony Dommett. Well done Tony!

The slide section was somewhat more difficult to judge as a portfolio but members were up to the job, placing Collin Wilkins in first place, David Rayner in second with Keith Mullin in third.

Colin Wilkins and Chairman Keith Miller critiqued the entries while counting of the votes took place and David Rayner collected last entries for the next digital competition during the tea-break.

On May 6th Colin Wilkins will be hosting the practical evening and the subject will be image sharpening. The next competition will be the 2nd Digital Shield on the 13th May. Visitors are always welcome to the club meetings and we meet at Bittaford Community Hall from 7:30pm normally on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’ photographs and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.
