Ivybridge wins 3-way Battle

A three-way competition between some of the region’s photographic clubs resulted in a resounding win for the Ivybridge & District Camera Club on the evening of February 26th. Ten of the club’s members travelled to Saltash to see the annual event which was held in the Burraton Community Centre and were jubilant when the result was announced.

Ivybridge scored 117 points for the print battle while Saltash came second with 111 points and Liskeard scored 106. The Digitally Projected Image battle was also won by Ivybridge with 128 points. Saltash came second with 124 points and Liskeard third with 120 points.

The judge, Mr Ron Eaton from Plymstock Camera Club, kept us humorously entertained while evaluating the work, but did disappoint some of the audience, saying, “The quality of print work was not as high as the digital work and this was reflected in the scores.”

On the following evening Ivybridge & District Camera Club held their first Challenge Cup competition of the year, judged by Mr Nigel Cheffers-Heard from Topsham. Nearly 40 members and visitors turned up for a very busy evening and a most enlightening critique of over 70 prints and slides. Nigel cleverly disguised his comments and kept the winning photographs a secret until after he had judged all the entries.

The Slide competition was won by Ivybridge member, Clive Brown with a superb and vibrant image of a fly agaric fungus. David Rayner, also from Ivybridge, took second and third places.

Keith Miller (Ivybridge) took first place in the Colour Print competition with ‘Exposed Headland’, a dazzling primary colour rendering of a lighthouse in New Zealand. Norman Simpson, also from Ivybridge, came second with an array of chemical bottles, while a square-faced gorilla in a square tight-cropped mounting took third place for Bernard Howley from Saltash.

First place in the Monochrome competition was secured by Ivybridge member and Competition Secretary, Keith Mullin with ‘Well worn Gate’, an image you could almost feel the texture oozing from. ‘Long Lie-In’, a stranded boat and ‘Spare Lintel’, a ruined Spanish finca gained David Rayner second and third places respectively.

The club is currently holding a photo exhibition in the South Brent Old School Centre. The event runs until the end of March and is free to enter, Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am to midday. On the 11th March Geoff and Jean Ashworth are the club’s guest lecturers with a presentation entitled ‘More Photoshopping’, while on the 25th March Judge Max Danby will critique the club’s Merit Open competition. Visitors are always welcome and we meet at Bittaford Community Hall from 7:30pm normally on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month. Our programme, members’ photographs and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.
