| The
2008 photography season has well and truly digitally
started with a couple of digital projection events at
the Ivybridge & District Camera Club this January.
On the 8th the
club held the first of the year’s competitions
towards the National Lottery Digital Shield League.
In this event members don’t have to print and
mount photographs. Instead, the images are provided
electronically and displayed using the club’s
computer and digital projector. The top six wining entries
all score points that go towards the league table.
Keith Miller of
Ivybridge took first place with an image of receding
columns that appeared to form a tunnel. David Rayner,
also from Ivybridge won second place with a misty morning
picture of boats at anchor on the Hamoaze. There was
a joint third place between a snow and bird scene from
Bernard Howley of Saltash and an oyster catcher from
Keith Miller. There was
also a tie for fourth place between Ann Owens of Plymouth
and Clive Brown of Ivybridge. Fifth place went to Alan
Davey from Ivybridge and sixth to Bernard Howley.
On the 15th of
January members gathered to take part in the selection
of digital images the club will enter into a Westcountry-wide
competition. The evening consisted of viewing the 100
highest-scoring entries to last year’s event to
get our image-appreciation skills sharpened and then
selecting the best images from our last four competitions
whilst attempting to address items we think the judges
will be looking for this year. All in all members looked
at over two-hundred images on the evening.
Members were invited
to discuss and rate potential images displayed, which
were then moved to appropriate folders on the computer.
David Rayner and two assistants Neil Doggett and Tony
Clements help keep score and track images on the computer
while Ann Owens, Keith Miller and Colin Wilkins acted
as arbitration judges in the final whittling down procedure.
The final twenty-five
images included submissions from: Keith Miller (2);
Bob Pike (2); Keith Mullin (2); John Taylor (1); Ann
Owens (3); David Rayner (3); Neil Doggett (5); Keith
Mason (1); Bernard Howley (5); Geoff Brimblecombe (1).
The club normally
meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month and the
next meeting will be an Open Merit competition judged
by Mr Ernie King of Dawlish. There will be an ‘extra’
meting on the 5th February offering practical help and
on the 12th February there will be a range of members’
Travelogues. Visitors are always welcome at Bittaford
Community Hall from 7:30pm. Our programme, members’
photographs and much more is available elsewhere on
this website.
