Six lucky members of the Ivybridge & District Camera
Club were thrilled and delighted to meet Her Royal Highness
the Princess Anne at the Official Opening of the town’s
new civic complex, The Watermark on October 2nd 2008.
The Princess Royal visited all areas of the building
and naturally, the collection of 50 atrium photographs
was on the ‘tour’. Six Camera Club members,
three from the committee and three others who had also
contributed to the atrium collection, were invited to
represent the club and duly turned out all spotlessly
tidy (and almost unrecognisable), ready to answer any
questions the Princess Royal might have.

Of course, with so much to
see and so many people involved with The Watermark,
it was some time before the Princess Royal arrived
in the atrium but when she did arrive she was
clearly delighted to see the photographs and expressed
interest in the precise
location of some of the images, as they were clearly
not all actually in Ivybridge. The Princess
Royal was also interested to know if the images
were taken using digital cameras or not. A few
of them are really scanned film, but Yours Truly
told her they were digital anyway! (I believe
the Royals don’t send people to the Tower
for fibbing these days, so I think I got away
with it.) After what seemed like an instant, but
was more like five minutes, HRH carried on with
her tour of the building and your six intrepid
representatives retired to the Stowford Hall to
partake in refreshments and mingle with one or
two local dignitaries.
The fifty photographs are mounted
on acoustic panels and form part of the atrium’s
sound dampening system. As such they are a permanent
display of some of our members’ images and
the club is justifiably proud to be represented
in this way. They were selected from over 100
offered by members of the Camera Club and represent
fifteen of our members’ photographs; many
taken specifically for the project. The images
are from Ivybridge and the surrounding areas and
include formal gardens, Dartmoor, the river Erme
and detail scenes from the town’s buildings.
