& District Camera Club member Tony Clements has
won an Ivybridge Town Hall competition with a local
photograph to be hung in The Watermark, the new Library
and Community Resource Building currently nearing completion
in Erme Court.
The Watermark has
photovoltaic solar panels fitted to its roof and the
electricity generated will be monitored and displayed
inside the building against the background of Tony’s
photograph.
Back in September
the Camera Club was contacted by the Town Hall and asked
if members would like to take photographs, one of which
would be used as the basis for the electronic display
to be hung in the new Library and Community Resource
Building. The members were very receptive and so a competition
was arranged by Assistant Club Secretary, David Rayner
in conjunction with Dawn Trower and Lesley Hughes from
the Town Hall. A picture with a ‘nature’
or ‘environment’ theme was called for, one
that could be printed at a reasonable size and one that
also had a local theme. A further condition that members
had to consider was unoccupied space in the image. This
would be needed for electronic meters and text to be
added before the display could be completed. Members
soon got busy with their cameras and by the end of November
over sixty photographs were handed over to the Town
Hall on a CD, to be judged by a panel including the
Town Mayor and the Project Architect, Sarah Lee.
The first Tony knew
about his success was when Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor
Karen Pringle who was Guest of Honour at the Club’s
annual presentation diner, announced the winner of what
had become known as the Watermark Competition.
Tony was ecstatic
and said, “I’m amazed. I never thought I
would win this, especially after discarding several
complex images in favour of a simple image of the town.”
The completed display
panel will be installed in the Reception area of the
building before the grand opening expected in spring
2008.
