| Two
competitions attracted a varied range of ingenious entries
at Ivybridge & District Camera Club’s recent
meetings. The subject for the first in April was ‘Self
Portrait’ which saw members stretching their creative
skills to avoid a simple portrait shot.
The Colour Print
section was judged by Competition Secretary Keith Mullin
and won by Ivybridge member David Rayner with a nude
self-portrait holding a strategically-placed portrait
of the same image, ad infinitum. Second place
was won by South Brent member John Taylor with his head
served up on a plate and third position was jointly
gained by Ivybridge member Gert Landers playing a violin
and Norman Simpson, also from Ivybridge with his ‘Brassed
Off’ reflection of himself polishing a brass complete
with duster and appropriately labelled tin of cleaner.
The Monochrome
section was judged by Chairman Keith Miller who decided
Ivybridge member Neil Doggett deserved first position
with a well produced half face image. Keith Mullin from
Ivybridge gained second place with a clever reflected
portrait of himself holding and looking through the
mount, while Tony Clements, also from Ivybridge, was
awarded third place with a portrait of himself looking
out to sea.
The Slide section
was judged by Assistant Competition Secretary Bob Pike
and was won by Keith Mullin with a Top Man shop window
reflection. David Rayner gained second place with an
image of himself spinning in a circle and Ivybridge
member Colin Wilkins took third position with a photograph
of himself on a mountain top.
Many of the self
portraits revealed a look of apprehension on the faces
of the photographers and Keith Mullin commented, “The
look reflected their anxiety at whether the photograph
was going to come out successfully or not!”
Another challenging
competition was found in the Nature Portfolio held a
fortnight later when a fine entry of portfolios resulted
in 45 prints to examine. The subject was ‘Rivers’
and each portfolio comprised three images to be judged
as a set.
The competition
was self-judged by voting slips and first place in the
Prints section was gained by Plymouth member Alf Couch
with a series of Dartmoor river scenes scoring 29 points.
Ivybridge member Clive Brown secured second position
with 27 points for his ‘Devon Rivers’ and
Keith Mason, also from Ivybridge, took third spot with
26 points for his ‘Rivers of New Hampshire’
The close scoring
reflected the tough judging that was needed to separate
a number of very evenly-matched portfolios.
The Slide section
was won by Clive Brown with a set of three strong autumnal
Dartmoor river images. Second was gained by David Rayner
with a set of ‘High Rivers’ and the third
place was awarded to Colin Wilkins with a ‘Torrents;
Rapids & Calm’ set of images.
The next normal
club evening will be part two of the Digital Trophy
on May 8th followed by the third Merit Open competition
on May 22nd Visitors are always welcome to our meetings
held at the Community Hall, Bittaford. This year’s
programme, members’ photographs and much more
are all available elsewhere on this website.
