| A
local radio broadcast boosted numbers for the Ivybridge
& District Camera Club’s first Practical Evening
of the year on February 6, with one of the new visitors
signing up to join the Camera Club on the night. The
club does not require visitors to join the club to enjoy
the practical evenings, nor indeed to continue to visit
normal club evenings as an observer, so it is especially
pleasant when a visitor joins on the first occasion.
The evening contained
a range of material that varied from exploring members’
digital processing requests to an interactive discussion
on image composition that concluded with three plucky
members, Ken Luke, Geoff Miller and Peter Pearce, being
directed by the audience to produce the best possible
group portrait composition.
On the 13th February
seven members gave their travelogues presentations either
by slides or by digital projection. It was an opportunity
for members to show ‘holiday snaps’ rather
than top quality compositions fit for competitions.
However, several members clearly demonstrated that holiday
photography for them does not mean composition-less
snaps. Fabulous views of Skye from Margery Evans (Ivybridge)
and captivating panoramas taken in Warrumbungle National
Park by Colin Wilkins, also from Ivybridge, were just
two of the travelogues that proved the point. Bernard
Howley of Saltash illustrated life on the Canary Island
of La Gomera and closer to home, Keith Miller (Ivybridge)
photographed a walk on Dartmoor especially for the evening.
Bruce Robinson also from Ivybridge showed a dramatic
helicopter Cliffside rescue mission and Ivybridge member
Dave Rayner gave an illustrated talk about a visit to
Sir Patrick Moore’s home and observatories, while
Keith Mason, also from Ivybridge, presented a journey
up Mount Washington by steam railway.
Many thanks to those
who produced the travelogues and made such an interesting
evening possible.
The next club evening
is February 27th when Mr Gordon Aspland from Abbotskerswell
will be judging the first of the year’s Challenge
Cup Competitions. This is followed by a practical evening
on March 6th when local artist Mr Bob Goodwin will talk
about composition and show how he uses photography to
prepare for a painting. Looking further ahead the club
will be running a month-long exhibition of photographs
at the South Brent Old School Centre for all of March.
Visitors are welcome to all events.
This year’s programme, members’ photographs
and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.
