A Series of 'Firsts' for the New Season

In a series of ‘firsts’ the Ivybridge & District Camera Club started off the new season with a magnificent turnout for the first event of the year, the club’s first-ever digitally projected image competition.

There were over sixty entries for this competition, which is being held as a league table event over three competitions during the year, and all the images were submitted by e-mail or on compact discs - also a first for members.

Chairman Keith Miller noted another first as he welcomed members to the new season. “This is the first time we’ve seen a queue form to enter at the club,” he said. The queue had formed because members were paying their yearly subscription and collecting this year’s programme.

Images for the competition were displayed using the club’s Lottery-awarded equipment including a digital projector and laptop computer. Competition Secretary Keith Mullin announced the titles on the first run through and members voted for their preferred images using their on slips on a second viewing. After tea-break the images were shown again for open discussion and critique with the able help of Colin Wilkins.

In another ‘first’ for the club, positions were awarded down to 6th place, a move introduced to help ‘movers and improvers’ immediately see their efforts rewarded.

First place went to Ivybridge member Keith Mason with a stunning image of a Monarch butterfly. Second was taken by another Ivybridge member, David Rayner with a bowl of oranges. Bob Pike from South Brent took third position with an otter and its reflection, while fourth place was gained by Pat Shaw from Eggbuckland with an interesting and well photographed view of Denham Bridge. Joint fifth was obtained by Graham Buckler and Clive Brown, both from Ivybridge, while Geoff Brimblecombe, also from Ivybridge, took the sixth spot.

The points awarded will now move on to the league table, awaiting the next digitally projected competition in May. After a third similar competition in October the overall winner will be presented with a new trophy, named in honour of the National Lottery’s Award for All scheme that made this all possible.

January the 23rd sees the year’s first Merit Open competition and a new series of practical evenings starts on February 6th. Visitors are welcome to all events. Looking further ahead the club will be running a month-long exhibition of photographs at the South Brent Old School Centre for all of March. This year’s programme, members’ photographs and much more are all available elsewhere on this website.

The winning entry in Ivybridge & District Camera Club’s first ever digitally projected image competition was Keith Mason’s Monarch Butterfly.
