A Competitive Challenge Indeed

Members and visitors of the Ivybridge & District Camera Club enjoyed a highly competitive Challenge Cup competition on the 10th October. Teignmouth photography expert Mr Ken Holland APRS DPAGB kindly judged the open subject event and so close were the winning entries he chose to award several prints the Highly Commended accolade.

Although this runner-up award may, in some respects, be disappointing for the photographer and scores no points in the league table, it is always welcomed as an expression of how close the image has come to winning. Open subject competitions often prove difficult to judge as the subject mater in one image may well balance against a minor quality or preference in another and this was not overlooked by Mr Holland in this very close competition either, who confessed to “going with his heart” to decide between first and second places in the Black and White section.

The Colour Print class was won by Ivybridge member David Rayner with a letterbox image of Smeaton’s lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe silhouetted against the sun. Second place was taken by Keith Miller, also from Ivybridge with a photograph of a bear ‘keeping cool’ in an amazingly colourful pool of water. Third position was captured by another Ivybridge member, Geoff Brimblecombe with an action-packed shot of powerboats racing on Plymouth Sound. Two Highly Commended awards were made by the judge, both to Bernard Howley from Saltash.

The Slide section was won by Keith Mullin of Ivybridge with a gold glowing image of a row of fish laid out on a fish stall. Second place was awarded to David Rayner for an image of fireworks on the Hoe and Colin Wilkins from Ivybridge took third place with a shot of a waterfall taken from the inside.

Bittaford member Peter Pearce gained first place in the Black and White category with ‘I See You’, a clever image of a face-like sculpture juxtaposed with a photographer taking a portrait photograph – three faces in one! Second place was given to a view of St Michael of the Rock on Brentor taken by David Rayner who also took third position with a night-time Barbican scene. Peter Pearce also gained a Highly Commended honour for a photograph of a Kaffir lily.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 24th October when we shall hold a rule-breaking photograph contest entitled ‘Against the Grain’ as well as an unmounted 5x7 competition. Visitors are welcome to attend from 7:30 pm at the Community Hall, Jubilee Terrace, Bittaford. Further information and directions are available elsewhere on this website
