| After
the summer break, meetings and events at the Ivybridge
& District Camera Club started with an exciting
pair of events to kick off the autumn season.
September 5th saw
a good turnout of members and visitors for the fourth
of the club’s Digital Practical Evenings. Despite
it being halfway through the planned series of practical
sessions, five new visitors were welcomed along. Ivybridge
member David Rayner showed attendees how to blend two
images of the same scene to achieve greater depth of
field - and importantly, how to set up and capture suitable
images with their cameras.
Adding copyright
watermarks to images was also covered and a short lesson
on causes and reduction of digital image noise was held.
Colin Wilkins, also from Ivybridge, ran a PowerPoint
presentation on camera shutter settings - how and when
to use the range of settings available on most modern
digital cameras.
The following Tuesday
saw over 40 members and visitors meet for the third
of the year’s Merit Competitions. A large entry
was received for the competition, particularly for the
colour print section, which had 38 images to be displayed
and judged. Members used voting slips to mark their
preferences and members had an opportunity to discuss
some of the entries while the counting up of points
took place.
Competition was
stiff with many entries of excellent quality vying for
points. In the end, clear first place winners were differentiated
but second positions came as a draw in each of the sections.
Colin Wilkins took
first place in the Slide section with a dramatic cliff-top
view of Harland Point. A joint second place was recorded,
shared between Ivybridge members Keith Mullin and Clive
Brown. Third place was also taken by Keith Mullin with
a highly texture rich image of an old wooden barn door.
Saltash member Bernard
Howley’s close up image of two butterflies took
first place in the Colour Print section. Joint second
in this section was shared between Bob Pike of South
Brent and Bernard Howley. Ivybridge member Geoff Brimblecombe
took third place.
First place in the
Black and White section was taken by David Rayner of
Ivybridge with a set of steps leading to the Corbiere
lighthouse. David’s image called Trust Me shared
second place with Bittaford member Peter Pearce’s
image of Wells Springs. Geoff Brimblecombe took third
place with a lone anchor on the quayside.
The next meeting
is the Sport Competition on Tuesday 26th September followed
a week later by a Digital Practical evening on October
3rd. Visitors are welcome to attend either event from
7:30 pm at the Community Hall, Jubilee Terrace, Bittaford.
