'Reserve' Rule Invoked

A packed audience made up of members and visitors to Ivybridge & District Camera Club welcomed Mr Peter McMullin DPAGB from Plymouth to judge the club’s 3rd Merit Open competition on Tuesday 23rd May.

There were so many entries to the colour print section that competition secretary Keith Mullin had to invoke the ‘Reserve’ rule and remove the third entry from each participant so as to make the judge’s task somewhat easier to perform in the time allotted. When it came to it, Peter McMullin still had to work hard to critique all the entries before 10pm, our normal finishing time.

First place in the Colour Print section was taken by Bernard Howley of Saltash with an almost 3D-looking print of a Louisiana Heron. Bernard also took second place with a print of contrasting houses. Third place was achieved by Ivybridge man Colin Lennox-Jones with a view of two deckchairs through a rock arch.

The Black & White section was won by Robin Empsall of Ivybridge with a low-level view of a church straddled atop a massive rock outcrop. Second position was also earned by Robin with a view of Venice canals. Bernard Howley wrested third with a white lily on a black background.

Keith Mullin of Ivybridge collected first place in the Slide section with ‘Sheep in the Meadow’ a vibrant local image, lit by a golden shaft of sunlight. Colin Wilkins of Ivybridge took second place with an image of towering sawn rocks. Third position was gained by David Rayner, also from Ivybridge with ‘Plain Sailing’ an enigmatic lone windmill on a rise overlooking a Spanish plain.

Judge Peter McMullin was clearly a digital enthusiast and commented that digital images could have been improved by some in-computer editing. However, a number of members thought that the extent of manipulation in a few of his suggestions were “not fair game” and a lively discussion ensued.

The next meeting will be a member’s travelogue and critique and will be held on Tuesday the 13th June. Visitors are welcome to attend from 7:30 pm at the Community Hall, Jubilee Terrace, Bittaford. Further information and directions are available elswhere on this website.
