Busy end to February

Ivybridge & District Camera Club had a busy end to February with an inter-club meeting at Saltash and an open subject Challenge Cup Competition the following week. Seventeen members visited Saltash Camera Club on the 20th for an absorbing evening with members of both Saltash and Liskeard camera clubs. The format was partially a competition, decided by voting slips, but with an open critique on all the photographs. The event proved a great success and an excellent way to get together and open conversation with other photographers.

The Challenge Cup Competition Competition, held on the very last day of the month, was kindly judged by Mr John Hawkins CPAGB, from Newton Abbott. The number of entries for the Colour Print section was so high that Competition Secretary, Keith Mullin had to invoke a little-used club rule and reduce the number of entries to a maximum of two per person.

Judging was both critical and constructive with Mr Hawkins taking time to encourage and advise some of our novice entries. It was good to see such a high standard of work, said Mr Hawkins, although he had noticed the gradual increase in Colour Print work in a number of clubs over the past few years.

Ivybridge man Graham Buckler won first place in the Black & White section with a moody portrait entitled ‘Steven’, while Geoff Miller, also from Ivybridge, took second place with a close-up moorland scene called ‘Gated Path’. Bob Pike from South Brent earned third position with a panoramic river estuary aptly titled ‘Storm Brewing’.

The Slide category was won by Keith Miller of Ivybridge with an airborne motorcyclist image. Keith also took second place with a slide depicting a close-up of a clematis. Colin Wilkins, also from Ivybridge came in third with a image of a colourful rock formation.

Bob Pike of South Brent won the Colour Print section with an ‘Inquisitive Robin’ image so full of detail that one thought it might fly out of the photograph. Bob also took third place with a picture of an otter ‘Eating the Catch’. Second position was captured by Keith Mason of Ivybridge with a liquid depiction of sailing boats in the Tamar Estuary entitled ‘Misty Morning’.

Some of these images and many more from our members are on Show in the Corridor Gallery at South Brent Old School for the whole month of March. Opening times are from 10.00am to 5.00pm on Monday and Fridays, 10.00am to 8.00pm Tuesday through to Thursday and 10.00am to 12.30pm on Saturdays. Entry is free.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday the 14th March when we will be pleased to welcome Mr Ernie King CPAGB from Dawlish to judge the Portrait competition. Visitors are welcome to attend from 7:15 pm at the Community Hall, Jubilee Terrace, Bittaford. Further information and directions are available elsewhere on this website.
