A contemporary look at photography

The first meeting of the year for Ivybridge & District Camera Club saw a wonderful turnout of almost 30 people to listen to Mr Rod Fry BSc ARPS CPAGB talk about judging competitions and his views and work with contemporary photography.

As well as a fine selection of members, we were delighted to meet six visitors, several of whom decided to join that very night.

After the short talk about the finer points he would look for in a photograph when on the ‘judging circuit’, Rod Fry took us through an emotional series of panels describing his progression from landscape and club amateur photographer to the world of contemporary photography and building panels for the world-renowned Royal Photographic Society.

Involving the audience on a number of occasions, Rod managed to describe his personal view of contemporary work, what it meant to him and what he hoped it meant to others.

Citing both the quickly-forgotten winning image of a competition and also the iconic images we will all never forget, Rod showed us that although an individual photograph could convey a deep image, as part of a panel of work it could mean much more. Indeed, the panel might convey a different emotion entirely. Rod then showed how such a meaningful panel could be constructed from images that on their own were almost inconsequential.

Some of Rod’s panels were accompanied by poetry recitals, along with the story of how the poems had come to be written for him. Very moving indeed.

Rod finished the evening with some very contentious arguments about the way photography was moving, especially club photography, and after inviting comments and discussion it was clear the evening could have gone on for many more hours, had time permitted. Rod was given a rousing round of appreciation and it is hoped he will return one day to continue the discussion!

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday the 24th January and will be the first of the season’s Merit competitions. Visitors are welcome to attend from 7:30 pm at the Community Hall, Jubilee Terrace, Bittaford. Further information and directions are available elsewhere on this website.
