| Members were pleased to welcome Mr Ron Eaton from Plymstock Camera Club on Tuesday 24th May to judge the third Merit Open competition of the year. Mr Eaton managed a full evening of monochrome, colour and slide judging as well as showing us some twenty monochrome panoramic images of Dartmoor scenes that he has put together over the last few years. Judging was tough and critical with Mr Eaton taking time to wring out the fine detail in each image, whether it be for constructive criticism or for praise. Mr Eaton noted an increase in the number of digital images he sees and also the characteristic sharpness of many digital prints, aided by the lack of an optical enlargement process. David Rayner from Ivybridge took first place in the Monochrome section with a cosy picture of two furry goslings sitting amongst daisies at Ford Abbey. Second position was won by Keith Mullin of Ivybridge with David Rayner gaining third. Bob Pike of South Brent took both first and second place in the Colour Print section, his photo of an attentive meerkat taking Mr Eaton's clear winning position. "Other positions were difficult to place," said Mr Eaton. "I moved the next four best prints from place to place for some time to get a result for second and third places and in the end awarded Highly Commended too," he said. Third place was awarded to Bernard Howley of Saltash with Highly Commended going to Christine Brown of Ivybridge. Clive Brown of Ivybridge won first place in the Slide section with an evocative night scene over the canals in Bruges. The second spot was won by David Rayner and third position went to Keith Miller with a striking image of a eucalyptus tree on a hill. The meeting was the last of the season but several events are planned with the next being a quiz night on the 14th June. On the 18th June the club will exhibit photographs and a display of 'cameras through the ages' at the Ivybridge Garden Association's Rose & Sweet Pea show. Both events to be held at St John's Church Hall, Ivybridge. As always, visitors or potential members are welcome to attend and further information plus directions are available elsewhere on this website.
