A sudden change of programme meant an unusual evening was experienced by members of the Ivybridge Camera Club on Tuesday 22nd March when Mr Ian Foster a judge from Liskeard was taken ill at the last minute and could not attend to scrutinise the club's second Merit Open competition of the year.

The photographs and slides were recovered from Mr Foster during the day by competition secretary Keith Mullin, along with a sealed envelope containing the judge's marks. In the evening, members criticised the photographs themselves and voted for positions in each of the categories. After voting, the judge's marking was opened and club members could see how close they came to the judge's marking.

It was fascinating to find that although members did not pick exactly first, second and third places the same as the judge, the results were remarkably close in most instances. It was also a useful opportunity for members to comment on the images and practise judging skills.

The judge's placings were taken as the correct marking for the competition to go forward to the yearly totals. Peter Pearce of Bittaford took first place in the Black and White section with an intriguing and detailed image of nutshells and crackers. Bob Pike of South Brent took second place with Christine Brown winning third position.

In the Colour print section Bernard Howley of Saltash did well, taking both first place and highly commended. His picture of two terns wading on a beach was at one and the same time dynamic in both the sky and waves yet serene with the birds in the foreground. Keith Miller of Ivybridge won second place and David Rayner, also of Ivybridge, took third position.

The slide section was won by Keith Miller of Ivybridge who also took second place with an outstandingly vibrant image of a single tree, it's trunk bathed in warm sunlight. Clive Brown of Ivybridge took third place with a view of the river Erme.

Around eighty visitors to the Ivybridge Garden Association's spring show on the 19th March voted by slips on the panels of photographs displayed by Camera Club members. The winning entry was entry number four from Mr Eric Foster of Ivybridge. Eric's tinted image of a horse seemed to be the image that caught most people's eye.

The next meeting is a studio evening on Tuesday April 12th when Steve Fussell from Rattery will demonstrate and encourage members to participate in studio photography with two models. The meeting starts at 7.30pm but is not at our usual venue of St John's Church Hall and instead will be held in the function room at the Westward Inn, Lee Mill.
