It was a full house at Ivybridge Camera Club on Tuesday 8th February with a good turnout for a 'digital evening' at St John's Church Hall. Members were pleased to welcome three visitors to the meeting. Three members, all from Ivybridge shared the platform, each bringing a different aspect of digital photography to members by means of presentations direct from their computers to a slide screen by digital projector. David Rayner kicked off the evening with an introductory presentation showing how digital cameras differed from traditional film ones and introducing the notion of pixels or 'picture elements' and some of the implications of digital imaging. David then gave members a tour of the club's website for the benefit of members who do not yet have Internet access. Next Keith Mason introduced members to the software package he uses and with it he completed a photograph edit, starting from an original digital image and taking it through to an actual printout in a few minutes. Some traditional film users who had not previously seen digital photographs processed were surprised at the relative ease and speed of the procedure that Keith demonstrated, and the resulting photograph print out was avidly passed around and closely scrutinised at tea-time. Robin Empsall then introduced members to another aspect of digital processing by taking a scanned copy of an old and tattered photograph and before our eyes magically transforming it into a highly acceptable quality picture by digitally repairing torn and water-stained sections and restoring the faded image. The evening was judged successful and entertaining with many questions from fascinated members being answered. The club has booked all of March at the Corridor Gallery at South Brent Old School Centre to display a range of members' photographs. As so many photographers want to display their work, it is thought that the month will be split in two so that members will have an opportunity to display a panel of representative work rather than just a few each. Opening times are from 10.00am to 12.30 on Monday and Saturday and 10.00am to 8.00pm Tuesday through to Friday. The next meeting will be on the 22nd February
at 7.30pm at St Johns Church Hall, Ivybridge when Mr John Hooper from
Tavistock will judge a range of prints and slides entered for the Challenge
Cup Competition. Visitors are welcome to attend.
