Steve arranged backdrops, two models and studio lights in a variety of combinations that allowed members to photograph silhouettes, soft gradations of lighting or hard tones. The two pretty and professional models were very patient, holding poses for considerable lengths of time while club members each took turns trying camera settings advised by Steve, who also showed us how to use large, diffused lights for soft lighting effects and when to use hard undiffused lights, in masculine portraits for example. Rather than use our own on-camera flash units, most members used one of Steve's dedicated flash activators connected to their cameras to trigger the main lighting and this was particularly necessary when photographing silhouettes to avoid accidentally lighting the front of the models and so ruining the silhouette effect. After the silhouette work was over, some members were able to use low power or off-scene flash to trigger the main lighting and this enabled more photographers to work together as we did not have to wait turn to use one of Steve's connections. A good number of club members had never undertaken this type of photography before and so were very thankful for Steve Fussell's advice, particularly in showing us how to arrange the models, who themselves were able to pose from minimal instruction and offer alternative positions. The session was enjoyed by everyone and all too soon was over. There was just time for club chairman Mr Keith Miller to give a vote of thanks to Steve and the models for an interesting and valuable evening before it was time to pack up all the equipment and say our goodbyes. The next meeting will be on Tuesday April 26th
at 7.30pm at St Johns Church Hall, Ivybridge when we will hold the annual
Nature Portfolio competition. This year the theme is 'weather'. Members
should bring their portfolio of three photographs along on the night
for internal judging. As always, visitors are welcome to attend and
further information plus directions are available on this website.
