Voting fails to split Light on Water entries

Light on Water was the subject for photographs entered into Ivybridge Camera Club’s Challenge from the Chair Competition on Tuesday 8th November, and as you might expect, a good proportion of entries featured sunsets from our local coastline.

The competition was internally judged by members using voting slips, which normally works well for the occasions we don’t have visiting judges but on this occasion the voting clearly reflected the difficulty many of our judges tell us - member’s best images are of a uniformly high standard and very difficult to separate.

Nearly 70 images were offered between the three sections, a record number of entries for the Challenge from the Chair competition and it was encouraging to see a number of submissions from new members.

Voting for the Colour Print section was close but clear winners emerged, Keith Miller of Ivybridge gaining first place with an entry called ‘Sunset over Bolbury Down’. Second place was won with a stunning image of a lighted candle floating on water taken by new member, Geoff Brimblecombe from Ivybridge. Another seascape, full of vibrant colour and movement from Bernard Howley of Saltash, took third place.

For the Slide section however, the voting awarded a dead heat between three entries with seventeen points each, a most unusual event! Colin Wilkins, David Rayner and Keith Mullin, all from Ivybridge, shared the first place. A further strange result soon transpired. The rules of this particular competition allow second and third places to be awarded even if more than one person wins first place. When this was taken into account it became clear that Keith Mullin not only gained a first place tie, but had taken second and third places too!

Voting for the Monochrome Print section went a little more smoothly with David Rayner gaining first place with an image entitled ‘Winter on the Beach’. David Rayner also took second position. Bernard Howley of Saltash and Peter Pearce of Bittaford gained equal points for a third place tie.

The next two meetings will only be a week apart at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesdays the 15th and 22nd November at the new Community Hall, Bittaford. Members will view the Western Counties Photographic Federation Slide competition entries first and the Print competition the following week. As always, visitors are welcome to attend and further information plus directions are available elsewhere on this club website.
