During spring
2005 six intrepid members of Ivybridge CC ventured out
into the cold, wet and windy Plymouth City by night.
Never alone but in bands of from two to four, the six
captured images inspired by the theme 'Plymouth by Night',
suggested by Keith Mason. The thing about taking photos
in a city at night is that you can get a lot of advice
from passers-by, not all of the sober variety either,
but amusing, mostly.
And the point
of all this bone chilling and finger numbing nocturnal
activity was to win the Devon Photographic Clubs Trophy
- a panel of just five similar looking images taken
by at least three different club members on a defined
theme. The judging against other photographic clubs
throughout Devon was to take place on May 14th at Kingsteignton.

All in all, members
made five trips and took some 320 pictures between them.
Some 30 of the images were processed and printed by
Dave Rayner for selection. After selection by club members
on two evenings, the subject was first refined down
to 'The Barbican by Night' and, after another nocturnal
city visit, to a panel of just five photographs.
As is traditional
in competition entry, members ran right up to the line
and Keith Miller and Keith Mullin were to be found mounting
the selected images late on the evening before the day
of the competition!
Eleven members
and partners travelled to Kingsteignton and joined some
150 members from other clubs to watch the judging. In
the end Ivybridge CC came 3rd with 112 points out of
a possible 120 - a good result considering that there
were only a few points extra to go to have beaten the
best. We achieved 18/20 points for the panel, 20/20
for the central image, 19/20 for two more images and
18/20 for the remaining two. 1st place went to Bideford
Photographic Club and second to Exmouth Photo Group.
Ivybridge came 5th in the unthemed slide competition
held at the same event.
Many thanks are
due to all concerned, from the many club members who
helped select the images to the six intrepid night-jars
- Dave Rayner, John Trussell, Tony Clements and 'the
three Keiths', Keith Mason, Keith Miller and Keith Mulllin.
The result was worth all the effort - thanks to all
who took part.
