Two weeks of end-of-year activity

Members of the Ivybridge Camera Club finished the club year with a busy and exciting two weeks. The annual general meeting held on December 6th was supported by almost all members and was followed later the same evening by the Best of Year competition in which the first-placed images from the year’s competitions are judged to ascertain the best photographs of the year. A week later the club held its annual presentation evening and dinner at the Furzleigh Mill Country Hotel, where nearly fifty members, spouses and friends attended for a convivial and enjoyable evening.

At the AGM members voted unanimously to change the name from Ivybridge Camera Club to Ivybridge and District Camera Club. The move follows the club’s wider catchment over the last year or so and also reflects the move to the new venue at Bittaford. After a few other changes to the rules and constitution were agreed, the rest of the AGM was dispensed with fairly speedily and members moved on to the Best of Year competition.

The best Colour Print of the year was taken by John Trussell of Ivybridge with his image of an owl entitled ‘Hogwarts Express’. The best Black and White of the year was awarded to Robin Empsall of Ivybridge with his ‘Venice Backwater’ print and the Best Slide of the year was won by David Rayner, also from Ivybridge with his crimson seaside sunset entitled ‘Man and Dog on the Beach at Wembury’.

Presentations of cups, trophies and shields for all the year's prize-winners in the various categories and competitions were made at the dinner evening held on December 13th. Guest of Honour, Mrs Ann Owens of Liskeard Camera Club kindly made the presentations, with competition secretary Keith Mullin making the announcements. The awards spanned winners who, for the most part, have already been mentioned in this column throughout the year. However the Merit League Table for which points are collected from all competitions are only resolved at the end of the year, so members were on tenterhooks to discover the results.

Merit League Table Shields were awarded to members coming top of the league with prize vouchers for second and third places. Keith Miller of Ivybridge took first place in the Slide category, with David Rayner of Ivybridge coming second and Clive Brown, also from Ivybridge coming third. The Colour Print shield was won by David Rayner and second place went to Bob Pike of South Brent, who shared the position with Keith Miller. Keith Mason from Ivybridge took third place. The Black & White shield was shared by Bittaford man, Peter Pearce and David Rayner, while Keith Mullin ranked second and Keith Mason came in third.

Winning members in other sections also received money vouchers to be spent on camera equipment, kindly part-donated by Dave Hall of Plymouth London Camera Exchange.

A raffle of donated presents was held, which raised over £70 for the Royal National Institute of the Blind. An appropriate charity, it was thought, considering that photographers need something the blind cannot distinguish - light.

The evening finished with a rousing vote of thanks for our Guest of Honour, Ann Owens, Competition Secretary Keith Mullin, and the organisers and helpers not only of the presentation evening but also of the many events that had been held throughout the year.

The new season starts on January 10th with a talk on Contemporary Photography by Mr Rod Fry BSc APRS CPAGB. Visitors are welcome to attend from 7:30 pm at the Community Hall, Jubilee Terrace, Bittaford. Further information and directions are available elsewhere on this website.
